HOW IS DENMARK ORGANISED TO GET ENGAGED IN IPBES

The Danish IPBES engagement is organised around two connected initiatives: the National Focal Point with the Ministry of Environment and Food (MOF) responsible for the Danish IPBES policy and diplomatic initiatives; and the National Co-ordination office - IPBES in Denmark, based at the university of Copenhagen and responsible for technical assistance to the NFP, engagement of the scientific and expert community and communication of IPBES outputs to stakeholders. In autumn 2016, three Danish universities established IPBES in Denmark: the University of Aarhus, the Southern Danish University, and the University of Copenhagen, and an agreement of cooperation with the MOF has been signed. Since then, two other universities joined IPBES in Denmark: the Roskilde University and the Danish Technical University, bringin the total number of participating universities to five.

The office of IPBES in Denmark is currently funded by the universities and operates independently but in co-operation with the MOF.

NOMINATION PROCESS 

The office of IPBES in Denmark will be responsible for recruiting and nominating Danish scientists and experts to coming IPBES assessments. The official nomination to IPBES is done by the MOF. Details on the nomination criteria are still in development but they are aligned with the standards of other European countries.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE IPBES WORK PROGRAMME (TYPE OF ACTIVITIES)

The IPBES in Denmark co-ordination office: 

• Provides technical assistance to the MOF in IPBES plenaries and for other requirements linked to its involvement in IPBES.
• Communicates relevant IPBES outputs to the stakeholders and decision makers in Denmark in addition to general public and media.
• Engages Danish scientists and experts from universities, NGOs, government, etc. to the review processes of IPBES.
• Indentifies and selects scientists and experts for coming author groups of the IPBES assessments.
• Develops IPBES-related projects with partners nationally and internationally.
• Supports and seeks funding for the engagement of young scientists and experts in the various IPBES networks and outputs.
• Stimulates funding for biodiversity-related research.
• Implements several IPBES symposia and experts’ workshops on biodiversity-related themes, including on biodiversity restoration, biodiversity and climate, and biodiversity and economy.

TYPE OF ENGAGEMENT WITH STAKEHOLDERS

The national IPBES coordinator informs various stakeholders in Denmark on IPBES outcomes such as:

• Research communities
• NGOs
• Managers and policy makers at local and national level
• General public via media
• Decision-makers such as business organisations and policy-makers
